First year students reported today the Nineteenth of September 2022 for the Academic year 2022/2023. The admission was led by Mr. Stephen Ochieng, Ms Joyce Kiboi and Mr. Ngutu on behalf of the Department. The students will undergo orientation within this week to welcome them at the University as they start a Five Year Program where they will study Bsc.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technolgy (MOEST) and African Development Bank (AfDB) officials visited the laboratories in the Faculty of Engineering on 1st September 2022.  

The Department of Civil & Construction Engineering procured calibration services from the Kenya Bureau of Standards. The KEBS staff did the calibration on 30th August 2022. The Uniaxial Testing Machine in the Concrete & Large Structures lab was calibrated.

Following successful interviews by the Faculty of Engineering, Mr. Muthomi Munyua was promoted from Graduate Assistant to Tutorial Fellow. Muthomi is in the Structural Engineering Thematic Group in the Department of Civil & Construction Engineering. Mr. Muthomi is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Nairobi.

The Department of Civil & Construction Engineering is pursuing a partnership with the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA) Capacity Building Programme. the department is trying to have a Centre of Excellence set up at the department to train the operators. The Department is hopeful that the bus rapid transit (BRT) rollout is on the way. Dr. Osano represented the department.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, Prof. Kiama, has nominated engineering staff to the Board of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). The following staff from the Faculty of Engineering have been nominated: 

1. Prof. Eng. Ayub Gitau
2. Dr. Eng. Simpson Osano 
3. Eng. Hesbon Hayowa 

The nominations were in response to a request from the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works (MOTIHUD&PW). 

Master's students who enrolled in September 2021 attend a seminar on their research proposals. Dr. Eng. Osano chaired the session. Mr. Muthomi assisted in guidance with the presentations. 

Some of the presentations were: 

Mr. Muthomi Munyua, a lecturer at the department of Civil & Construction Engineering was appointed a trainer of engineers on the structural eurocodes. Mr. Muthomi led the training on Eurocode 0, Eurocode 1 and Eurocode 7. Muthomi would be assisted by Mr. Maati Ondari from Kenyatta University and Dr. Eng. Joseph Thuo of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. 

The training was held in Naivasha at the Lake Naivasha Resort and Sawela Resort along Moi South Lake Road in Naivasha, Nakuru County. 

Two lecturers from the department of Civil & Construction Engineering, Prof. Gichaga and Prof. Abuodha appointed to the taskforce to review of the Road Design Manuals and Standard Specification for Road and Bridge Construction. Prof. Gichaga has vast knowledge in Roads Engineering while Prof. Abuodha is a practising structural engineer.
