Accessibility of people and goods to various centers is the basic function of a road and is important for socio – economic activities of the society. In Sigiri (Busia County) accessibility across river Nzoia is a big challenge to the residence of the area due to the absence of a bridge and as a result the only mode of transport across the river is by use of small boats. This largely affect the socio - economic activity in the area due to limited transportation

 The road in the area is also in very poor state and condition as stated below:

Compliance to construction and materials specification results into a pavement structure capable of carrying the design traffic within the design period. Therefore, there is need to establish feasible option of improving the available gravel economically and timely to meet the contractual specifications without financial and time related contractual implications.

National Construction Authority, (2014) published a report pointing out critical issues that the construction industry in Kenya faces; a major problem they noted is the lack of skilled labor in the industry. 75% of the workforce in the industry is either unskilled or semiskilled, it states. This leads to substandard work and considering the high employer’s expectations, it is unacceptable. The report also sheds light on the shortage of skills in the industry especially in the sectors of welding, carpentry, painting works, plumbing, masonry and electrical works.
