Abstract
With the growing population land is becoming more and more a scarce resource thus the need for its efficient use. This has led to the growth of buildings of tall structures to house people
There is need to provide safe and affordable housing for multiple people under an otherwise small plot of land.
Construction plays a crucial role in the economy of the country and thus the need to provide a final product that conforms to the client needs, is affordable, safe and environmentally sound.
The objectives of this project were to carry out the structural design of a six storey reinforced concrete residential building located in Nairobi-Tasia Estate in accordance with the Eurocodes and make detailed drawings so as to provide an engineering structure that fulfils its intended purpose, able to withstand all loads imposed on it during its lifespan, is stable, is able to minimize deflections to within allowable limits (rigid), and able to withstand any movement subjected to it (stiffness).
This involved the careful study of the architectural drawings, determination of the loadings, preliminary sizing of members and their location, checks on deflection and sway, detailed design and analysis of the structural elements and finally a representation of the design in the form structural drawings.
Computer software such as Robot was used for a more detailed and accurate analysis and this was compared to manual computations. The drawings were prepared using AutoCAD.
