Abstract
As the population and the economy of the country continue to grow, there is a growing need
to establish more office space to cater for this. Office blocks provide sufficient office space in
a limited area of land thus saving on land and improving its aesthetics.
The objectives of this project were to carry out the structural design of an office block using
reinforced concrete and make detailed drawings in accordance with the more recently
established Eurocodes in order to ease the transition from the British Standards. This
involved the study of the architectural drawings, determination of the loadings, preliminary
sizing of members and their location, detailed design and analysis of the structural elements,
checks on deflection, cracking and sway and a representation of the design in the form of
structural drawings.
Architectural drawings for the existing building were obtained through the consultants from
Mombasa County and structural analysis and design were performed by hand calculations
with the assistance of various text books. The drawings were prepared using AutoCAD.
