As part of their Fourth Term field visits, third-year students from the Department of Civil & Construction Engineering, University of Nairobi visited the Sondu Miriu Hydropower Plant, gaining valuable insight into real-world hydropower generation and infrastructure systems.
During the educational tour, the students were taken through several key components of the facility, including the dam structure, the penstock area, and the power generation plant. Engineers and technical staff at the plant offered detailed explanations of the hydropower process, operational safety, and the critical role such infrastructure plays in Kenya’s energy sector.
This visit provided students with a practical understanding of theoretical concepts learned in class, such as fluid mechanics, hydraulic structures, and energy conversion systems. It also underscored the importance of sustainable energy solutions and the engineering behind large-scale infrastructure.
The Department of Civil & Construction Engineering continues to prioritise experiential learning through field visits that expose students to Kenya's engineering heritage and professional practices.
