Abstract

The objective of this project was to assess the removal of manganese and ironat KiamumbiWater Project via an oxidation system made of an aeration chamber as well as a pre-chlorination system. Data on manganese and iron concentration and values of pH were obtained on a monthly basis from September 2018 to February 2019. Confirmatory tests were conducted on the treated and raw water collected from the Kiamumbi Water Project.

The raw water’s manganese and iron concentrations were found to be above the recommended values of 0.5. mg/l and 0.3. mg/l respectively. However, manganese and iron concentrations fell within the acceptable limits after the raw water was oxidized.

The highest and the lowest concentration values of Iron in the raw water were found to be 0.75 mg/l and 0.4 mg/l respectively. Consequently, the highest and the lowest concentration values of manganese in the raw water were found to be 1.0 mg/l and 0.55 mg/l.Additionally, the highest and lowest values of iron in the treated water were found to be 0.2 mg/l and 0.1 mg/l respectively while the highest and the lowest values of manganese in treated water were found to be 0.1 mg/l and 0.03mg/l respectively.
