Overview

Philosophy of the Programe

The philosophy of the programe is to intended for Engineers with suitable qualifications and/or Professional experience who wish to study further or expand their range of expertise in specific field of Civil Engineering.  The options offered are tailored to the requirements of the Civil Engineering Industry. 

Rationale

The course contents will enable participants to specialize in any of the five following options.  Not all these options will be available in any one year.

(i)    Environmental Health Engineering

(ii)   Water Resources Engineering

(iii)   Geotechnical Engineering

(iv)  Structural Engineering

(v)  Transportation Engineering

 

Objectives

The aim of this program is to produce graduates who are both skilled in structural engineering principles and have the ability to apply and solve complex open-ended engineering works and problems. The program of Master of Science in Civil Engineering will produce Civil Engineers who are:

  • Knowledgeable to apply practical skills to face the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving civil engineering field.
  • Capable of demonstrating individual, professional and social responsibility through value and attitudes.
  • Able to organize and relate ideas coherently in written, oral, and graphic form using standard conventions and tools and synthesize information, and draw reasoned inferences in the field of civil engineering.
  • Proficient with information management skills to pursue advanced educational opportunities, along with the development of life-long learning skills for enquiry based learning.

Schedule of Intakes

The Department admits new students at the beginning of every academic calendar year (which is usually September).

Mode of Delivery

  • Face-to-Face Mode

This is through lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

  • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

In case of delivery through ODeL, special arrangements shall be made for the practical laboratory, field work and computing sessions. Where not feasible alternative arrangements will be made to do them on campus. 

  • Blended Learning

This is a hybrid of face to face with Open, Distance Learning and e-learning.

Admission Requirements

The following shall be eligible for admission into the programme:

  1. A holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering of the University of    
  2. Nairobi with at least Second class honours (upper division) or Second class honours     
  3. (lower division) with two years working experience or Pass with  six years working experience
  4. A holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree of the University of Nairobi in a discipline closely related to the selected MSc option who has in addition relevant practical experience to be assessed by a departmental panel.
  5. A holder of similar qualifications from the other institutions recognized by the Senate as equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree of the University of Nairobi

Schedule of Intakes

The programme shall normally consist of a two-year study by coursework, laboratory, examination and thesis.

  • Coursework, laboratory and examination    -    12 months
  • Project work and thesis presentation   -    12 - 15months

In the first year of study the candidate will be required to undertake six approved full courses or the equivalent.  Four of these or the equivalent will be compulsory.

A full course means 60 hours consisting of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, and a half course means 30 hours consisting of lectures, tutorials and laboratory.  In general a full course will comprise of 40 hours of lectures and a half course 20 hours of lectures.  The remaining number of hours in each course will be devoted to tutorials and/or laboratory work.

The second year will be devoted to an individual research project which must be written up as a thesis and submitted for examination in accordance with University Regulations.

    Structure:
