    Abstract

Composite construction is an effective method that delivers good performance. It involves the
use of two different materials, in this case steel and concrete, joined together so that the
resulting component acts monolithically. From a structural point of view, the objective is
usually to exploit the best properties of the multiple dissimilar materials in order to obtain
increased strength, durability, economy, environmental sustainability and aesthetics while
    maintaining functionality of the structure.
The goal of this project was to design a 11 storey mixed-use composite building taking full
advantage of all the benefits that accrue from composite construction such as structural
stability, shallower sections, reduced weight etc.
With respect to the above objectives, i.e, to obtain increased strength, durability, economy,
environmental sustainability and aesthetics, the design of the composite building was carried
in accordance with the Limit State Design Theory. For compliance to set standards, the
Eurocode building standards and design data from various manufacturers were employed. The
results achieved revealed adequacy in the member sections selected.
