MANAGEMENT OF WATER QUALITY BY THE COMMUNITY- KISERIAN

Abstract
Effective water quality management is a vital step towards an ecologically sustainable
development. It includes plans that promote efficient and comprehensive programs for
controlling water pollution from point and non-point sources in a defined geographic area. In
order to achieve this, certain water quality parameters must be monitored and controlled.
The objective of this study was to analyze the involvement of the Kiserian community in the
management of water quality. This was achieved through a mix of methods including door to
door interviews, the use of questionnaires and a water quality analysis of the sampled water
It was found out that the water was good for consumption in spite of the iron content present
being above the regulatory limit for drinking water guidelines.
It was thus concluded that the deterioration in water quality was as a result of the collection,
transportation and storage of water.
The recommendations made were therefore focused on maintaining the quality of water all the
way from the point of supply to the point of consumption.
Among the challenges faced during the study is the lack of co-operation from some borehole
operators who refused to have their water sampled.
