USE OF THE BIOSAND FILTER AS A SOLUTION TO CURB EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION CASE STUDY: NAIROBI RIVER

Abstract
Nairobi like many other cities in the continent started off as a medium-sized city in the early
1950s with a well organized and planned structure to ensure order in most avenues of urban
concerns. However, from the 1970s through to the 1990s, as she grew into a metropolis, planning
rapidly faded hence resulting into chaos and disorder which has affected the existence
negatively.
Water pollution is a major concern in the city. This is because the main source of water, the
Nairobi River, has been greatly polluted. There are many reasons for this pollution with improper
sewage disposal and treatment topping the list. The people who greatly suffer due to pollution
are the slum dwellers. Due to lack of proper latrines there’s a wide range spread of cholera,
typhoid and other water-borne diseases.
There are simple methods that can be implemented to improve the quality of water fetched and
used for domestic purposes. This includes the bio-sand filter which is a simple and home-made
apparatus. With this system one can filter the water and reduce e-coli, turbidity, oxygen demand
and other harmful parameters in the water.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxygen demands and amount of solid substances in the
Nairobi River for a period of time. The study was for the Nairobi River at various sampling
points upstream to downstream.
A biosand filter was also made in order to analyse and test whether its introduction to the society
would be of great help. This is because the main polluted areas are those close to the industrial
area and the slums. With the biosand filter society can be educated and this can help reduce the
number of lives taken away too early because of preventable water-borne diseases.
