MAKING CONCRETE BY REPLACING SAND WITH BLAST FURNACE SLAG

ABSTRACT
This project involves the testing of the properties of the concrete made by replacing blast furnace slag with normal sand. The main aim of this project is to find out whether partial or whole replacement of sand with slag can yield results similar to those of class 25 concrete made out of ordinary sand. Given the high growth of steel and iron related industries in our country and also the need for development ( vision 2030), the amount of slag produced in the country will increase with time hence the need to find a way of how to use it.
In this project, a number of tests will be conducted on the material i.e. water absorption of slag, particle size distribution, bulk density of slag and compare them to ordinary sand used in making concrete. Tests will also be done on the concrete made out of partial and whole replacement of slag with sand (compressive and flexural) and compared to values gotten from concrete made out of ordinary sand.
