ASSESSMENT AND ROAD-SIDE DRAINAGE DESIGN- UNIVERSITY WAY

ABSTRACT

With the challenges faced during rainy season by the road users it becomes essential to adopt a proper design method of drainage system that would give an immediate solution to prevent our roads from flooding prior to comprehensive engineering investigations. This project evaluates the importance of having an efficient drainage system on our roads. To achieve this, hydrological and hydraulic analysis were conducted pertaining the area concerned. The main data required for this analysis were the rainfall intensity computed from maximum monthly rainfall from the previous years and the general catchment area so as compute total run-off experienced in the area. The study found that the existing drainage was adequate to handle the storm water. It was therefore concluded that the drainage problems faced on the road are mainly due to lack of good adequate water collection structures and some errors made during design of the entire system. From the hydrological analysis of this data that was used in the hydraulic design it was therefore recommended that some few adjustments be made on the existing methods of run-off collection and improve the kerbs and gullies existing.
