USING GIS TO STUDY POLLUTION ON NAIROBI RIVER

Abstract
A continuous increase in population over the recent years has led to urbanization and
industrialization. This has been a great benefit to mankind but at the same time, it has brought
about negative impacts to the environment the main one being pollution. This project aims at
using GIS to show pollution hot spots along the Nairobi River. Data collected from 13
sampling points was presented in tabular form. ArcGis was used to change the data into
shapefiles, which were input into the GIS software. The points were overlayed on each other
and different intensity of colour was used to show variation of pollution along the chosen
sampling points on the Nairobi River. GIS enabled observation of the data at a glance which
allowed interpretation of pollution profiles. Pollution was noted to increase as the Nairobi
River flowed downstream. The heavily polluted areas were around Industrial area and human
settlement areas such as Kibera slum.
