A STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GOESYNTHETICS

Abstract

The considerable increase of using geo-synthetics in reinforcement of slopes and earth walls has led to the need of evaluating the pullout properties in various types of conditions. This report investigates the effectiveness of the granular soil and steel-plastic composite geo-synthetics used in soil reinforcement. A pullout experiment was carried out to obtain pullout resistance on different soil and reinforcement conditions.

 The laboratory pullout tests were carried out using the large pullout testing equipment developed at the University of Nairobi. The pullout test section contained geo-synthetics specimens at the mid height of the pullout test box.

The testing program on pullout test evaluated the effect of reinforcement length, water content and confining pressure on the pullout resistance. Laboratory tests were performed using red soil which was obtained in Dagoreti.
