ABSTRACT
Nondestructivetestingisusedto obtain materialpropertiesofinplaceelementsofa structure
withoutdestruction ofthe specimen.Concretebeinganintegralpart of construction,knowing
thestrength of itbeforecommencementofconstruction isveryimportant.Knowingthe
strengthisalsoimportant throughoutthe lifeofthebuilding.For onetobe ableto knowthe
specificationsof cast- inconcretethe28-daycompressivetestoncylindersandcubesis
important whichiscastfrom the same concretemixas the structure.Thisisa representativeof
thecast concretestrength.However, notalltimesthatthe cubeswill representin-situ
conditionsvariousfactorsinfluencevariationsincludingageofcuring,typeofaggregate and
size of aggregates.
Therearevariousmethodsofnondestructivetestingmethodsthat canbeusedfordetermining
thehealthof anexistingstructure.Therebound Schmidthammer was chosen fortesting.Itis
usedtodeterminethe strength of concretewhichworkswiththeprincipleofreboundfroman
elasticmasswhichdependsonthehardnessof asurface againstwhichthe masshits.

The laboratorytest for strength of concreterequiresoneto loadthe castcubesandcylinders to
be loadedtofailure.Thismayresult in actualdeterminationofstrengthof concretebut may
notnecessarilydepict actual strength ofbuildingknowingthereIadditionof reinforcementfor
thesame.
The aim ofthisproject isto obtain calibrationcurvesforthe rebound Schmidthammer and
hencedeterminethe strength oftheCivil engineeringblockbuildinginrelation.
