STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF AN UNDERGROUND CAR PARK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI GREAT COURT

Abstract
The current capacity of parking spaces at the University of Nairobi Main Campus is not
sufficient to service the future demand. The campus has a large and ever growing number of
members of staff and students. There is need for more parking space to be created at the
university.
The objectives of this project were to carry out the structural design of a reinforced concrete
underground car park in accordance with Eurocode 2 and make detailed drawings and
specifications for the parking facility.
The project was significant in that it would solve the problem of parking at the University of
Nairobi main campus for now and years to come. Therefore, with less congestion at the
university, the staff and students would achieve a desirable level of comfort.
The university was surveyed for the best possible location of the underground parking
facility, and The Great Court was the preferred choice. The underground parking was
designed according to recommended geometric standards and sufficient structural capacity to
carry the loads at both ultimate and serviceability states.
