A STUDY OF GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION IN THE EASTLANDS OF NAIROBI

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project is to investigate the level of groundwater contamination in Eastland of Nairobi County and to make recommendations in accordance to the results.

This was achieved by obtaining the existing data of boreholes in Eastland of Nairobi from Water Resource Management Authority. Six boreholes were selected from the boreholes in the area for obtaining samples. The groundwater samples were then tested using the Standard Methods for the examination of Water and wastewater (APHA, 1975) and compared against the standards provided for by WHO but limited to the resources available at the University of Nairobi Public Health Engineering Laboratory.

The groundwater samples from the region met most of the quality standards required. Thus it is safe to conclude that at the moment the groundwater in the region is safe for consumer consumption.vv
